Our Heritage
Founded in 1903 by A. L. Campbell and was known as A. L. Campbell Furniture and Undertaking. The current location of the funeral home, was then, the site of the furniture store. During that era, many funerals and visitations where held in the private residence's of the families of whom experienced a death. In later years the funerals and visitations were held in the personal residence of the Campbell family, located next to the furniture store.
Mr. and Mrs. Campbell had three sons, the heir apparent to the funeral and furniture business was Mr. Merton A. Campbell, Merton took over the business in 1957 and in and around 1965 he closed the furniture store, deciding at that time to devote all of his attention and energy to funeral service. It was at this time he moved funeral service from the residence to its current location.
In 1967 Mr. Campbell was approaching 70 years of age and after dedicating at least 50 years to funeral service he and his wife Evelyn decided to retire. They sold the funeral business to Irene and Walter Scotland in 1967. Mr. and Mrs. Scotland initially operated the business with the assistance of Mr. Campbell. Vince Warren was a dedicated employee of Mr. Campbell's for years and stayed on as a full time employee with the Scotland Family until his death in 1984.
In 1977, Irene and Walter Scotland decided to enlarge the funeral home, they constructed an addition of a combined chapel/large visitation suite and also a private family room.. This addition was decided upon for two reasons. The increase in the number of client families who called upon them and to provide spacious comfort and privacy.
In 1983 their son, Dave returned home after spending 10 years away. He had worked at two different funeral homes gaining experience and training. He was employed as an apprentice, then a licensed funeral director at the Comstock Funeral Home in Peterborough then at the Graham A. Stein Funeral Home in Kingston. In July of 1986, Dave purchased the family business from his parents. Irene and Walter built a home in Portland that year and started to enjoy semi-retirement status
In 1992, Irene died at the age of 60 of Cancer. In 2001, Walter at the age of 73 of heart complications then on November 1, 2017, Dave died very suddenly. As of September 1, 2018, I purchased the Funeral Home. My pledge is to provide the best possible service, the best possible facilities and to do this with compassion, dedication, consideration, professionalism and understanding.
Since the Scotland Family purchases, and moving forward, there have been many changes to the existing building. Constant upgrades to our facilities and services are being completed to meet the expectations of the families we serve.
