Condolences

Condolence From: Erin Merkley
Condolence: Mr. Ron Greene was a very popular teacher at Benson for a number of years. I had the privilege of being in his class in the early 90s, during his final years at Benson. His classroom was full of wood. If you wanted to borrow a pen - it was chained to a wooden block. This was also true of scissors, glue, clips and staplers. A sure way to stop theft!
He had a very hands-on approach to teaching science. In Grade 6, we were using alcohol burners and flints to conduct science experiments, making sponge toffee and bubble gum. There were jars of overripe bananas in the back of the classroom so we could observe the behavioral characteristics of fruit flies. One day, he even brought in two dead beavers he'd found on the side of the road, and dissected them during class.
Mr. Greene insisted on the use of manners, and demanded "MAY I" be used when asking permission. If you happened to say "Could I please", you were immediately interrupted by Mr. Greene engaging the room by saying "What is it class?" and entire classroom of students shouting "May I!" Not a mistake you wanted to make again!
In addition to having high expectations from his students, he also made an effort to ensure we all felt special for being uniquely you. He taught "Guidance" which was a class created on his own, and discussed the importance of being honest, and being a friend. He also was a champion for the "VEP" (Very Exceptional People?) program that ran within the schools during the 80s and 90s, and believed in the undeniable power of positivity.
Anyone who had Mr. Greene as a teacher would have fond memories of "bronco rides", and his open-armed, full-smiled declaration that something was "FANTASTIC!"
His legacy will live on in the hearts of all his hundreds of students. My condolences to Mrs. Greene and his extended family and friends.

Condolence: My sincere condolences to family of Ron. He was my principal at Hiscock's Public School. During the years I got to see him at my workplace and he always had time to spare a few minutes talking about his current endeavors and catching up. He always had a smile on his face and enjoyed his life. Sorry for your loss. Ann Caverly
